Here are some of the best ski deals:

• Colorado Pass: This popular pass offers unlimited skiing at Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin, with 10 days, excluding some blackout dates, at Vail and Beaver Creek for $449. For unlimited days at Vail and Beaver Creek, get the Epic Pass, for $599. Or get the Summit Pass, for unlimited skiing at the first three resorts, for $399. Available at REI and Colorado Ski and Golf in Colorado Springs. This year, Vail Resorts is offering pass insurance, which, for $20, will refund your money if you get sick, injured or laid off from your job.

• Rocky Mountain Super Pass: Unlimited skiing at Winter Park and Copper Mountain for $399. The Super Pass Plus includes six days at Steamboat for $449. Available at both Christy Sports locations in Colorado Springs.

• Monarch season pass: Monarch is selling season passes for $319 through Nov. 7. Prices then jump $100. This year, season passes include free skiing at 10 other resorts.

• A Basin offers a $349 Bonus Pass, which includes unlimited skiing there and five days at Breckenridge and Keystone, and one of those days, excluding blackouts, at Vail or Beaver Creek.

• For those who don’t mind driving farther, Wolf Creek is selling passes through Oct. 4 for $574, then they jump to $718. Aspen/Snowmass is offering several new passes with smaller up-front costs and “pay-as-you-go” options to spread the cost over the season.

And what if you don’t plan to get in enough ski days to make a pass worthwhile?

Window-bought lift tickets in Colorado are notoriously expensive – more than $90 at some mountains. While some smaller ski areas, including Ski Cooper, Monarch and Wolf Creek, have already announced ticket prices will remain the same this year, many larger resorts have yet to reveal their prices.

But there are ways to ski much more cheaply.

One local favorite is the Colorado GEMS Card, offered by Colorado Ski Country USA. For $10, skiers get a free lift ticket (with restrictions) to Echo Mountain, Monarch, Ski Cooper and SolVista, two-for-one tickets at five resorts and discounts at nine. Numerous restrictions and blackout dates apply, so visit www.coloradoski.com/Resorts/Gems/GemsCard/ for details and to buy one.

Many resorts also offer four-day passes, usually in the $130 to $140 range, available at the same locations season passes are sold. They are usually available only in the fall, like season passes.

For those who wait until the last minute, there are other options. Pass-holders usually get a few half-priced lift tickets, so find a friend to ski with. Or, as a last resort, you can usually get lift tickets about $10 cheaper than at the ticket window at local grocery stores.

Another popular promotion, Ski Free Colorado, will be back this year. Skiers who buy 10 gallons of gas at a Shell gas station – not Phillips 66 as in past years – can get a two-for-one lift ticket coupon for Monarch, Copper Mountain, Powderhorn and Winter Park. Visit www.skifreedeals.com for more information.

For those with kids, Ski Country USA will again be offering the popular 5th Grade Passport, which provides three days of skiing at all member resorts – that doesn’t include Vail Resorts’ four mountains – for 5th-graders, for free. The 6th Grade Passport includes four days at each for $99. Apply for both passes at www.passport.coloradoski.com.

Vail Resorts offers its own version, the School of Shred pass for 5th and 6th graders, good for four free days at Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin. They’re available where Vail Resorts passes are sold during the fall.

Rudolph said many resorts will offer bundle deals, including lessons, lodging, travel or gear rentals with lift tickets to encourage visitors.

So when, exactly, will the ski season start?

Snow-makers at Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are already gearing up for the annual race to be the first ski resort to open for the year. Both opened Oct. 15 in 2008.

Loveland got the early jump, firing up the snow guns Monday, two days ahead of schedule, thanks to a cold front that brought freezing temperatures and accumulating snow on the mountain. Loveland spent $500,000 on snow-making equipment this summer, and officials there are hopeful of opening first.

“We’re certainly going to try to win. We’re going to do everything we can, just like every year,” said Loveland spokesman John Sellers last week.

Not so fast, said A Basin spokeswoman Leigh Hierholzer.

“We’re a little higher in elevation, which helps us,” she said. She did not have a date for snow-making to commence.

Asked about the snow-making upgrades at rival Loveland, she said, “The race is still on and we still intend to win it.”

Savvy skiers know to look for ticket deals now

Autumn is only two days old, but the chill in the air and the recent dusting of snow in Colorado are reminders that ski season is on the way.
Colorado's ski resorts were hit hard by the recession last year, with visits down 6 percent . Unlike past years, this season will see few major terrain expansions or new features at most resorts, as operators wait to see how the recession will impact the winter business.

Front Range skiers can take advantage of this uncertainty - if they act now.
While most resorts have yet to reveal their window lift ticket prices, tickets at some are staying at last season's rates, and season passes at most are remaining the same as last year, or even dropping in price, as resorts seek to compensate for the drop in national and international visitors by luring local skiers to the slopes. Some are offering payment plans, making passes good at other resorts and adding other perks.

But many incentives and pass sales end before the lifts begin running, and prices for others begin going up in October, so buy now to save later.
Get a list of the best ski deals at www.Gazette.com

Steamboat scores high again with readers of SKI & Skiing Magazines - Voted #1 Best Tree Skiing and #1 Family Program in North America

For the second year in a row, Skiing Magazine Readers give Best Trees to Steamboat. The majority of new terrain opening is in the Sunshine and Priest Creek areas including Tomahawk, Flintlock, Quickdraw, Rendezvous Way, Sunshine Liftline, Rolex, Westside, Broadway, Daybreak and more. In addition, East Face, North St. Pats and Last Chance will open on the north side of the Ski Area on Saturday. However, Moonlight, Lights Out, lower Shadows and lower Priest Creek, Sundown Express liftlines as well as Christmas Tree Bowl and the Chutes will remain closed. The hugely popular mini-terrain park on Lil’ Rodeo will continue to feature rails for those looking for a park play.
In addition to the 5 chairlifts already operating, South Peak, Sundown Express, Elkhead and Sunshine Express will begin spinning on Saturday. Rendezvous Food Court will also open this weekend, serving up hot meals to skiers and riders in the Rendezvous Saddle area. Thunderhead Food Court, Stoker, Four Points Hut, Bear River Bar & Grill and Gondola Joe’s are currently open and providing all the nourishment powderhounds crave.
Snowmaking crews have fired up the machine-made flakes on lower Vagabond, Mavericks Superpipe, Drop Out and continue to work other key areas across the resort. Currently, Steamboat is reporting a 26-inch mid-mountain base and 36-inch summit base on packed powder conditions. With over 3 feet of snow since the resort opened Nov. 26th, there are still plenty of powder stashes and prime early season conditions to be found on the hill. Forecasts are calling for a strong system to track through the area this weekend and into early next week, bringing with it the potential for significant snowfalls and continued prime snowmaking temperatures.
“As cold temperatures play in our favor along with more snow from Mother Nature, we are working towards a December 20th opening for Morningside chairlift and a December 27th opening for Pony Express,” says Allen. “As soon as we’re able to make snow on the crux area of the lower portion of the Pony Express lift, we’ll open Pioneer Ridge as hike-to terrain.”
At this time the only backcountry access currently available from the ski area is from the access point near the microwave towers atop Mt. Werner. State law prohibits an individual to cross any rope on the Steamboat Ski Area, a $1,000 fine. Hiking up the mountain outside of open areas is prohibited. The US Forest Service and Routt County Sheriff’s office support the ski area’s enforcement of trail closures as provided under the Skier Safety Act.
“It’s important for guests to remember that even with the superb early season conditions Steamboat has, it’s still early in the season, hazards exist and portions of the ski area are still closed,” says John Kohnke, patrol director. “Unfortunately, the resort has already suspended 126 days of skiing and riding for closure violations. It’s your responsibility to understand which trails are closed and remember, a closure could be as simple as one closed sign at the top of that trail.”

Steamboat to host the US Olympic Team Trials in Freestyle Skiing!

What a great way to spend New Years week in Steamboat Springs Colorado . . .

STEAMBOAT TO HOST U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS IN FREESTYLE SKIINGThree Reigning World Champions, Two Defending World Cup Champions & Three Reigning Olympic Medalists Scheduled To Compete In Steamboat This Winter STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-September 6, 2005-The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association, the century-old organization which serves as the national governing body of Olympic skiing and snowboarding, and Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation announced that the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for aerials and moguls skiing will take place Dec. 30-31, 2005, in Steamboat-Ski Town U.S.A. ® NBC Sports will televise the event with a 90-minute show, including aerials and same-day coverage of moguls airing on New Year’s Eve day at 2 p.m. EST. "It allows us to give back to a community that has supported the Team for so long and to provide some exciting ski competition for athletes vying for the 2006 Olympic Team.” The U.S. Olympic Team Trials is essentially a wild-card opportunity for athletes to make the Olympic Team, as two winners (male and female) from each freestyle discipline (aerials and moguls) will be named to the 2006 U.S. Olympic Freestyle Team. The remaining athletes will qualify for the Olympic Team through a season-long series of existing World Cup competitions. The entire 2006 Olympic Freestyle Team will be named Jan. 25, 2006. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Ski Town, U.S.A. will include men’s and women’s aerials under the lights at historic Howelsen Hill on Friday, Dec. 30th, and men’s and women’s moguls on the Voo Doo trail at the Steamboat Ski Area during the morning on Saturday, Dec. 31st. "Freestyle is clearly one of the hottest sports in all of skiing, consistently generating some of the highest television viewership ratings in the sport,” said Andy Wirth, vice president of marketing & sales for Steamboat. "Freestyle skiing always has been, and remains a huge part of Steamboat’s claim to Ski Town USA, and we are excited to be hosting the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.” Three reigning World champions, two defending World Cup champions and three reigning Olympic medalists are just part of the unprecedented depth on the 38-member U.S. Freestyle Ski Team who are expected to compete for an early Olympic Team spot. Among the top competitors will be 2005 World Cup champions Jeret 'Speedy’ Peterson (aerials) and Jeremy Bloom (overall, moguls), along with World champions Nate Roberts, Hannah Kearney and Toby Dawson. While this is the first official Olympic Team Trials event for the U.S. Ski Team, Steamboat athletes are no strangers to early selection to Olympic Teams. Both Ann Battelle and Travis Mayer secured their spots on the U.S. Olympic Team during wild-card competitions. A discretionary pick for World Cup action to start the 2002 Olympic season, Mayer clinched an Olympic berth on New Year’s Eve and went on to win an Olympic silver medal in moguls less than two months later. Steamboat has a long tradition in the sport of freestyle skiing and is currently home to freestyle athletes and coaches such as Nelson Carmichael, 1992 Olympic bronze medalist; Ann Battelle, 1999 World champion and four-time winter Olympian; Kris Feddersen, three-time Olympian and World Cup winner; Ryan St. Onge, World Cup winner and two-time U.S. aerials champion; Travis Mayer, 2002 Olympic silver medalist; Don St. Pierre, current U.S. Ski Team moguls head coach; Jeff Good, former U.S. Ski Team head coach, who coached four Olympic medalists; and Park Smalley, athlete, former U.S. head coach and driving force behind the Olympic status freestyle skiing enjoys today. In addition, Steamboat hosted the U.S. Olympic Freestyle Team’s 10-day pre-Olympic camp in 2002 before the Team came to Salt Lake City and won three Olympic medals.
